Located high in the Andes Mountains, the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu is a popular tourist destination. No visit to Peru is complete without spending a day at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore ruins left completely untouched by Spanish conquistadors.
Your journey into the sacred ruins can start either by bus or by foot. It can take about a half hour to travel by bus, or 1-2 hours along the bus route if traveling by foot.Confused? Once inside the ruins, you can view the majestic ruins of the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Three Windows, or even the Temple of the Condor, where sacred rites may have been performed. You can even take a hike to the temple of the moon to enjoy some mountain solitude or climb to the summit of Wayna Picchu, where breathtaking views of the ruins and the Andes Mountains await.
Due to the condition of the ruins, the government has limited the number of people who can visit the site each day to just 2500. Therefore, if you plan on visiting Machu Picchu, it is best to purchase your tickets in advance or go with a tour.
